Fantastic food, great decor and very reasonable prices. A great gem in nanaimo. I, will recommend to all my friends and family.

I recently went here with a friend for an early dinner. The food was amazing, the service top notch and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Highly recommended.

As High as it gets! This restaurant is a must see for tourists and the person wanting a romanitc escape/ adventure and local food fare! I would state a must have is 1) Nanaimo Bar Maritini (you will never get another like it) 2) Happy Sushi Roll to start (one of a kind) and 3) The hamburger (fresh and grease free) Further more, you get service with a smile, a touch of class and an environment that Vancouver Island can only call their own!

I find under the new ownership they have made big improvements to this restaurant! This is definitely my new favorite place. I gave them a shot last week for lunch and my burger was awesome! Staff looked happy and service was really good. It was busy but Darby made sure I was well taken care of. Great job!

Some of you who found your stay less than pleasurable may like to know that the Modern Cafe is under new management. If you're in the area, give it a try!

We happend upon this restaurant on a Monday evening, in town for a memorial service the following morning.
The decor and atmosphere were just what we were looking form. Modern and funky, cozy, unrushed.
The macarroni was out of the world. If you go, you have to try it. You can get it in two portion sizes. My husband had the full order and ended up taking a third back to the hotel for a late night snack. (he would have been able to take back over half, but I kept digging in when he wasn't looking.)
I had the grilled salmon with veggies and wild rice mix. Delicious as well, also couldn't finish the entire meal. (Portions were large)
Server was very friendly, recommended items, and was never pushy, but was always around when we had a question. Prices were reasonable, especially for the size and of course the flavour. If in Nanaimo again, will definitely return

I agree with Roulade. We have dined here several times over the years but our last experience dining there will be our last. The food is very average. Nothing to rave about. The service is deplorable and the attitude of the owner is even worse. I'm sure it won't be long before we see the doors of this establishment closing for good. Very sad.

I have been going to the Modern Cafe since it opened. It is the best place in the city for atmosphere. The staff are incredibly friendly and the service is excellent. The food is *consistently DElicious*. The place is hopping mid-week, so that tells you something right there! I always recommend the Modern Cafe to people. It is my GOTO place, top of the list. Period.

Have been going to this cafe for several years and the service/quality has continually become poorer and poorer. As a small group we have found that, while the food is adequate and the servers are average, the wait time and service levels are unacceptable. The management does not seem to know how to manage staff in any logical or efficient fashion and it is affecting the ability of this place to rise to the level of quality it should be known for. I hope it gets better.

Delicious food coupled with a unique decor...love the vintage flair. However, missed the Ceviche appetizer that is no longer on the menu, would love to see it back.
